Samstagvormittag, die vom Wind zerfranste argentinische Flagge flattert am Fahnenmast. Wir sind endlich an der argentinisch-chilenischen Grenze angekommen, kurz vor Feuerland. Auf den ersten Blick auf der Landkarte glaubt man Feuerland ist fest mit \u201eRestargentinien und Chile\u201c verbunden. Tats\u00e4chlich ist Feuerland eine gro\u00dfe Insel die von einer Meeresstra\u00dfe, die sogenannte Magellanstra\u00dfe, vom Festland getrennt ist. Der \u00f6stliche Teil der Insel geh\u00f6rt zu Argentinien, der restliche Teil zu Chile. So muss der Reisende – von Argentinien kommend – zuerst ca. 220 Kilometer chilenisches Gebiet durchqueren, einschlie\u00dflich einer kurzen F\u00e4hrpassage \u00fcber die Magellanstra\u00dfe, bevor er auf dem argentinischen Teil Feuerland\u00b4s ankommt.<\/p>\n

Wir bilden das Ende der Autoschlange die am Schlagbaum steht. Vor uns ca. 30 PKW\u00b4s und einige Lastw\u00e4gen. In einem Geb\u00e4ude werden an vier Schalter die Grenzformalit\u00e4ten bearbeitet und trotzdem dauert das ganze eine Ewigkeit. Dies ist nur die Ausreise aus Argentinien. Nach ein paar hundert Metern Fahrt durchs Niemandsland folgt Teil zwei, die Einreise nach Chile. Auch dies dauert wieder ewig lange. Nachdem unsere Papiere mehrfach abgestempelt wurden, wollen wir losfahren. Ein zotteliger Typ mit Spiegelsonnenbrille kommt auf uns zu und will in den Bus. Michaela \u00f6ffnet die T\u00fcr und versucht sich mit ihm zu verst\u00e4ndigen. Ich halte ihn lediglich f\u00fcr einen St\u00f6renfried und will ihn gerade rausschmei\u00dfen, da kl\u00e4rt Michaela den Irrtum gerade noch rechtzeitig auf und h\u00e4lt mich zur\u00fcck. Es ist der Grenzbeamte welcher f\u00fcr die Lebensmittelkontrolle zust\u00e4ndig ist. Es ist verboten Obst, Gem\u00fcse und Fleisch nach Chile einzuf\u00fchren. Unsere erst gestern gekauften Tomaten nimmt er dann auch gleich mit. Somit hat er sich wahrscheinlich sein Abendbrot gesichert. F\u00fcr die gesamte Grenz\u00fcberschreitung haben wir 3 \u00bd Stunden ben\u00f6tigt. Uns graut schon jetzt vor der n\u00e4chsten Grenz\u00fcberschreitung in umgekehrter Reihenfolge, die heute noch am sp\u00e4ten Nachmittag erfolgt. Die n\u00e4chsten 50 Kilometer bis zur F\u00e4hre geht es z\u00fcgig voran. Dann folgen 170 Kilometer ruppige Schotterpiste bis zum n\u00e4chsten Grenz\u00fcbergang. Nun Ausreise Chile \u2013 Einreise Argentinien. Diesmal ben\u00f6tigen die Grenzbeamten f\u00fcr die Abfertigung nur die H\u00e4lfte der Zeit. Unser Tagesziel werden wir durch die lange Dauer der Grenzabfertigung heute nicht mehr erreichen. Und so beschlie\u00dfen wir kurz vor Rio Grande am Strand zu \u00fcbernachten. Durch die D\u00fcnen suchen wir uns eine Zufahrt zum Strand. Kurz nicht aufgepasst und schon ist es passiert. Wir sind von der Piste abgekommen und die Vorderr\u00e4der des VW-Busses graben sich bis zur Achse im Sand ein. Es wird schon dunkel. Ich \u00fcberlege, ob es nicht besser w\u00e4re den Bus morgen \u201eauszugraben\u201c. Michaela dr\u00e4ngt aber es noch heute zu erledigen und so machen wir uns an die Arbeit. Los geht\u2019s. Michaela aufs Dach, Kiste auspacken, Sandbleche runter und Klappspaten im Dauereinsatz. Wir wechseln uns ab. Schaufeln, Sandbleche unterschieben und das ganze wiederholen wir mehrmals bis wir endlich nach gut 1 \u00bd Stunden wieder festen Boden unter den R\u00e4dern haben. Wir sind verschwitzt und m\u00fcde. Das Abendessen f\u00e4llt heute aus, aber bei ein k\u00fchlen Bier aus dem K\u00fchlschrank lachen wir schon wieder \u00fcber die \u201eAktion\u201c. Dies war nach der eint\u00f6nigen \u201ePampafahrerei\u201c in den letzten Tagen wirklich ein abwechslungsreicher Tag.<\/p>\n

... Michaela lacht schon wieder<\/p><\/div>\n

Seit gestern sind wir nun auf Feuerland. \u201e Feuerland \u2013 Weite, Einsamkeit, Freiraum f\u00fcr Tr\u00e4ume\u201c steht in einem alten Reisef\u00fchrer, welchen ich bei meiner ersten S\u00fcdamerikareise vor f\u00fcnfzehn Jahren dabei hatte. Das stimmt nur zum Teil, denn in Sachen \u201eEinsamkeit\u201c hat sich seit damals einiges getan. Wer den kleinen vertr\u00e4umten Fischerort Ushuaia von einst in Erinnerung hat und ihn jetzt wieder sieht, wird erstaunt sein. Z\u00e4hlte der Ort 1975 noch nicht mal 6000 Einwohner leben heute \u00fcber 60 000 Menschen hier. Und der Zuzug ans Ende der Welt ist noch nicht am stagnieren. In den Vororten werden st\u00e4ndig neue Siedlungen angelegt. Dazu kommen die Massen an Touristen. In den Sommermonaten legen im Hafen von Ushuaia an die 80 Kreuzfahrtschiffe an und bringen 100 000 Touristen, zus\u00e4tzlich zu den tausenden von Bus- u. Flugreisenden.<\/p>\n

Auch die MS Delphin, das Schiff auf welchem Michaela zuletzt gearbeitet hatte, kommt von einer Antarktisreise zur\u00fcck und ankert f\u00fcr zwei Tage in Ushuaia. Schnell arrangiert sie ein Treffen mit einigen ihrer Arbeitskollegen und wir schlemmen mit ihnen in einem fantastischen Asado-Grill-Restaurant. Vom Tisch aus kann man zusehen, wie die ganzen L\u00e4mmerh\u00e4lften sch\u00f6n langsam \u00fcber dem Feuer gar werden.<\/p>\n

... Essen mit Arbeitskollegen von der MS Delphin im Asado-Grill-Restaurant<\/p><\/div>\n

Auch die rie\u00dfigen Rindersteaks sind nicht zu verachten. Ein Alptraum f\u00fcr jeden Vegetarier oder aber – das Paradies f\u00fcr Fleischesser. Im Allgemeinen lieben und essen die Argentinier f\u00fcr ihr Leben gerne Fleisch. Immer und \u00fcberall wird gegrillt. Ein Argentinier verzehrt pro Jahr im Schnitt 61 kg Rindfleisch. Im Vergleich dazu kommt der Deutsche gerade mal auf 13 kg. Auch wir sind seit einigen Tagen auf den Geschmack gekommen und grillen immer \u00f6fters. Das Kilo Rinderfilet kostet umgerechnet 3 Euro. Soviel zum Fleisch und Argentinien.<\/p>\n

Wir verbringen noch ein paar nette Stunden mit Michaelas Kollegen im Park bei Dosenbier und herrlichem Sommerabendwetter, das selbst f\u00fcr diese unwirtliche Region nicht der Norm entspricht. Zwei Tage vor unserer Ankunft hat es hier noch geschneit.<\/p>\n

Von Ushuaia aus besuchen wir die Estancia Haberton und ein kleinen Fischerdorf, namens Puerto Almanza, fahren dann weiter ins Landesinnere auf der Suche nach dem \u201eeinsamen Feuerland\u201c. Wir biegen von der Routa National No.3 links ab und folgen einer Schotterpiste f\u00fcr ungef\u00e4hr 40 Kilometer. Laut Karte sollten wir eigentlich vor dem LagoYehuin stehen. Jedoch weit und breit kein See, auch keine Beschilderung. Wir \u00fcberlegen, umkehren bringt auch nichts. Wir fahren also weiter und gleich um die n\u00e4chste Baumecke hat er sich versteckt. Ein wunderbarer See mit glasklarem Wasser. Weit im Westen erkennt man die Gletscher und die verschneiten Gipfel der Darwin Cordillere. Am Ufer steht ein verlassenes und abgebranntes Hotel. Kein Mensch, keine Seele, nichts. Eine etwas gespenstische Atmosph\u00e4re umgibt uns. Es herscht Totenstille. In diesem Moment glauben wir die einzigen Menschen auf diesem Planeten zu sein.<\/p>\n

Der Wind hat sich gelegt und nun erw\u00e4rmen uns sogar ein paar Sonnenstrahlen.
\nMichaela h\u00f6rt Ger\u00e4usche, aus der Richtung von der wir gekommen sind. Aber bei so viel Stille kann man ja schon mal fantasieren. Nach einiger Zeit wieder das gleiche Ger\u00e4usch, nun h\u00f6re ich es auch. Es ist ein Fahrzeug. Wenige Sekunden sp\u00e4ter kommt ein Gel\u00e4ndewagen auf uns zu. Es sind Joli und Ingo aus Luzern mit ihrem Toyota. Wir kennen uns bereits vom Campingplatz in Ushuaia. Dick eingepackt in Jacken sitzen wir dann abends bei hei\u00dfem Tee und Kaffee am See zusammen und unterhalten uns \u00fcber Gott und die Welt, bis uns die K\u00e4lte in die Fahrzeuge treibt.<\/p>\n

Am Morgen trennen uns unsere Wege wieder. Sie bleiben noch einen Tag und wir wollen weiter nach Norden und dann auf den chilenischen Teil Feuerlands. Die Lebensmittel werden noch mal aufgef\u00fcllt, denn in Argentinien sind sie wesentlich billiger als in Chile. Da einem Gem\u00fcse, Obst und Fleischwaren an der Grenze Argentinien-Chile abgenommen werden, kommen diese nun aus dem K\u00fchlschrank raus und werden f\u00fcr kurze Zeit in unserer Bord-Toilette eingelagert, die wir sowieso zweckentfremdet als Lebensmittellager benutzen. Nun hoffen wir, dass der Lebensmittelkontrolleur einen Blick in den K\u00fchlschrank bevorzugt. Was sich als richtig erweist; nicht nur das, er sieht unsere Toilette und sagt wissend: Ah el bano, muy bien. (Ah eine Toilette, sehr gut!)<\/p>\n

Wieder geht es \u00fcber Stunden \u00fcber staubige Schotterpisten. Wir fahren an abgesperrten Mienenfelder vorbei, die noch immer an den \u201eBeihnahe-Krieg von 1978\u201c erinnern. Auf den Verbotsschilder steht auch in deutscher Sprache\u201c Betreten verboten\u201c. Damals brach ein Streit um drei winzige bedeutungslose Felsen vor der K\u00fcste im S\u00fcdosten Feuerlands aus. Die Argentinier sowie auch die Chilenen beanspruchten die Eilande f\u00fcr sich. Erst dem Papst gelang es, im Jahre 1985 den Konflikt zwischen den beiden L\u00e4ndern zu schlichten. \u00dcbrigends, beide Staatsoberh\u00e4upter waren streng gl\u00e4ubig und geh\u00f6rten der katholischen Kirche an. Gegen Abend erreichen wir das Meer, wo wir unser Nachtlager einrichten. Da es kaum B\u00e4ume gibt, sammle ich Treibholz f\u00fcr unser Lagerfeuer.<\/p>\n

Es gibt genug am Strand. In der Zwischenzeit legt Michaela unsere geschmuggelten argentinischen Rindersteaks in Knoblauch ein. Diese schmecken heute nat\u00fcrlich besonders gut. Zwei Fischer, deren Kutter vor Anker liegt, sehen das Feuer und kommen mit ihrem kleinen Ruderboot zum Strand. Es sind zwei junge Indios, welche auf dem Fischkutter arbeiten. Trotz ihres f\u00fcr uns schwierigen Dialektes und unseren sp\u00e4rlichen Spanischkenntnissen kommt eine Unterhaltung zu Stande. Zur Not hilft das W\u00f6rterbuch oft weiter. Die beiden Fischer m\u00fcssen aber morgen fr\u00fch raus und rudern wieder zur\u00fcck.<\/p>\n

Wir nehmen Abschied von Feuerland. Von Porvenir aus bringt uns ein kleines F\u00e4hrschiff in 2 \u00bd Stunden \u00fcber die Magellanstra\u00dfe. Ein letztes Mal blicken wir nach Feuerland zur\u00fcck Bei unserer Ankunft in Punta Arenas h\u00e4ngen tiefe Wolken \u00fcber der Stadt. Diese Stadt nennt sich auch \u201edas Tor zur Antarktis\u201c. Von hier aus fahren in den S\u00fcd-Sommermonaten Kreuzfahrtschiffe zum 6. Kontinent. Punta Arenas ist nicht gerade ein Schmuckst\u00fcck. Auf uns jedenfalls macht diese 120 000 Einwohner Stadt keinen besonderen Eindruck.<\/p>\n

Unser Weg f\u00fchrt uns weiter in Richtung Norden \u00fcber Puerto Natales zum Torres del Paine-Nationalpark. Unterwegs besuchen wir noch eine kleine Kolonie von Magellan-Pinguinen, die den selben Namen tragen wie die Meeresstra\u00dfe an der sie leben. Wenn es hier Winter wird fl\u00fcchten die Pinguine nach Brasilien.<\/p>\n

Auch wir fl\u00fcchten weiter nach Norden mit der Hoffnung, dass es endlich w\u00e4rmer wird und aus dem Sturm wenigstens ein gem\u00e4\u00dfigter Wind wird. Bei Cerro Castillo sehen wir auf einer Estancia den Gauchos – so nennen sich die Cowboys S\u00fcdamerikas – bei ihrer Arbeit zu. Heute werden die K\u00e4lber gebrandmarkt.<\/p>\n

Sie werden mit Lassos eingefangen und von zwei Gauchos festgehalten. Dann wird den K\u00e4lbern ein rotgl\u00fchendes Brandeisen mit dem Zeichen der Estancia in die Flanke gedr\u00fcckt. Nichts f\u00fcr schwache Nerven; die Gauchos gehen mit den Jungtieren nicht gerade zimperlich um.<\/p>\n

Wir w\u00e4ren gerne noch geblieben doch der Wind treibt uns st\u00e4ndig Staub in die Augen. Er wird zum Orkan. Die Wagent\u00fcr l\u00e4sst sich kaum noch \u00f6ffnen. Ohne \u00dcbertreibung !!! Erst im Wagen sind wir in Sicherheit. Wer jetzt noch mal zum Pinkeln raus muss hat verloren. Der Wind kommt aus allen Richtungen. Erst gegen Abend und im Torres del Paine – Nationalpark angekommen, l\u00e4sst er etwas nach.<\/p>\n

Schon bei der Zufahrt zum Nationalpark d\u00fcrfen wir die Vielfalt der Tierwelt bestaunen. Guanakos-Herden und Nandus, die s\u00fcdamerikanische Strau\u00dfenart, grasen unbeeindruckt von den vorbeifahrenden Pkw`s neben der Stra\u00dfe. Drei Condore kreisen am Himmel und eine kleine Gruppe von Flamingos stolzieren am Seeufer entlang. Auch Pumas sollen hier leben, einen zu Gesicht zu bekommen ist eher unwahrscheinlich. Zum \u00dcbernachten sind mehrer Pl\u00e4tze im Nationalpark ausgewiesen. Von unserem Standplatz aus haben wir eine tolle Aussicht auf den Cuernos del Paine, den gewaltigen Gebirgsstock und das Herz des Nationalparks.<\/p>\n

Am Abend ist es recht k\u00fchl und uns vergeht die Lust unter freiem Himmel zu kochen. So gibt es wieder mal kalte K\u00fcche. Wir verkriechen uns in unsere warmen Betten und tr\u00e4umen von einem besseren Wanderwetter f\u00fcr Morgen.
\nEine Wetterbesserung ist nicht eingetreten und ist auch nicht in Sicht. K\u00e4lte, Wind und Regen wechseln sich ab. Am dritten Tag geben wir dann auf und fahren weiter nach Argentinien.<\/p>\n

... unterwegs im Torres del Paine-Nationalpark<\/p><\/div>\n

Es geht auf die Cuarenta ( Routa National No. 40) nordw\u00e4rts durch das patagonische Tafelland bis El Calafate. Dann die Stichstra\u00dfe zum Perito Moreno-Gletscher. Das Patagonische Innlandeisfeld mit seinen abflie\u00dfenden Gletschern ist das gr\u00f6\u00dfte Eisfeld der Welt, wenn man mal von den beiden polaren Eisregionen und Gr\u00f6nland absieht. In unmittelbarer N\u00e4he des Perito Moreno-Gletscher beobachten wir wie haushohe Eisbrocken von der Gletscherkante abbrechen und unter lautem Get\u00f6se in den Lago Argentino st\u00fcrzen. Ein wirklich gigantisches Naturschauspiel das uns die patagonische Naturb\u00fchne hier vorf\u00fchrt.<\/p>\n

... Perito Moreno-Gletscher<\/p><\/div>\n

Hier treffen wir wieder Petra und Richhard aus Schrobenhausen die 3 Monate mit ihrem VW-Bus unterwegs sind. Kennengelernt haben wir uns bereits im Torres del Paine-Nationalpark.
\nGemeinsam fahren wir zum Lago Roca wo wir ein paar Tage zusammen verbringen. Der t\u00e4gliche H\u00f6hepunkt ist immer das abendliche Grillen am Lagerfeuer bei eisiger K\u00e4lte. Durchhalten ist angesagt. Sp\u00e4ter W\u00e4rmeflaschen und Standheizung.<\/p>\n

Nachts h\u00f6ren wir ein Donnern aus der Ferne und wissen es ist kein Gewitter, sondern nur wieder ein weiterer Eisblock der sich von der Gletscherkante abgel\u00f6st hat und in den Lago Argentino st\u00fcrzt. Dann schl\u00fcpfen wir noch tiefer unter die w\u00e4rmende Bettdecke.

..."Lets go to Tierra del Fuego!"<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n

Saturday morning: The Argentinean flag waves from the flagpole, it is quite ragged.. Finally we arrived the Argentinean – Chilenian border, we are near Tierra del Fuego. If you look onto the map for the first time, one could think that Tierra del Fuego is a peninsula of Argentina and Chile. In fact it is a huge island which is separated by the water street called Street of Magellan. The eastern part of the island belongs to Argentina, the rest of it to Chile. In order to come to Tierra del Fuego one have first to pass about 220 km through Chile \u2013 including a ships passage over the Street of Magellan \u2013 and then you are at the most southerly point of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina.<\/p>\n

We are at the end of a long waiting line at the border from about 30 cars and a few lorries. In a small building there are four counter where all the papers get stamped to be allowed to leave the country Argentina. It takes ages till it is our time. After all is done we can go and we drive now through no man\u00b4s land to the border of Chile. As well this procedure needs quite a while. After we have again stamped all our papers to enter Chile, we are ready to go. That\u00b4s what we thought!! A person with dark sunglasses comes to our bus and want to see the bus. Not at all he is looking like someone working for the government. So I think, he is someone want to hitch-hike. Michaela opens the door and try to speak to him. In that moment I am ready to throw him out of the bus, Michaela realizes that he is from the food control and stops me to do so. By law it is forbidden to bring any veggies, fruits and meat into the country. Yesterday we bought fresh Tomatoes, these are now belonging to him. It took us about 3 \u00bd hour\u00b4s for the whole procedure at the border to leave and enter again. That means that we now already know what will come after the 220 km. But first we have to make it on a gravel road for the next 170 km.
\nNow we have to do the border control the other way round. Leaving Chile and then entering Argentina. But this time we need just half of the time. But still we can\u00b4t make our destination for today and so we decide to overnight near Rio Grande at the beach. We make our way through the dunes and — for only one minute I did not concentrate and we get stuck in sand till the axle. It is nearly night time and I think it over if we should not leave it until tomorrow. But Michaela wants to do it right away and so we start to work. Michaela get\u00b4s onto the roof of the bus, catches the sand metal plates and the spade. We do the work in turns: digging, sand metal plates under the wheels of the bus and this for about four turns. After 1 \u00bd hours the wheels of the bus are on hard soil again. We are tired and hungry but nevertheless we are just having a cold dinner instead of a warm one. Out of the fridge we get us a cold beer and after five minutes we laugh already about this \u201cadventure\u201d. After this long and boring rides through the Pampa, this day was really full of changes.<\/p>\n

... Michaela is in good mood again<\/p><\/div>\n

Since yesterday we are now on Tierra del Fuego. In an old guide, which I have bought 15 years ago for my first trip to South-America, it is written: \u201cTierra del Fuego \u2013 endless plain, lonely paradise and lot\u00b4s of space for dreams\u201d. Well this is just partly true, \u201cseclusion\u201d is not like it have been 15 years ago. For example the small fishing \u201cvillage\u201d Usuhaia. About 6000 inhabitants did live here in 1975, where nowadays the population is 60 000 and it seems that there are coming more people to live here, since all over you can see construction sites for new houses. Additional during the summertime\u2019s there are about 80 cruise ships getting into the harbour of Usuhaia with about 10 000 tourists coming, apart from the daily Tourist\u2019s which arrive in buses and via airplane.<\/p>\n

As well the MS Delphin, the ship on which Michaela did work, comes back from an Antarctic trip and be anchore for two days in Usuhaia. Michaela quickly arranged a meeting with a few colleagues from the ship and we go out for a fantastic dinner in an Asado-Grill-restaurant. From our table we can look onto the whole lamb which is roasting slowly over the wooden fire place<\/p>\n

As well the huge beef steaks are tasting wonderful. A nightmare for all vegetarians but a paradise for those who love meat. The Argentinean people love to eat meat. In average they eat per year\/ person 61 kg meat. In comparison the German people eat just 13 kg. Even we \u2013 normally not very fond of meat \u2013 eat since we are in Argentina quiet a lot of meat. The cost of a kilogram of a filet of beef is just 3 Euros.<\/p>\n

We have a great evening with the colleagues of Michaela and in the end we have a few cans of beer which we drink on this wonderful Summer evening in the park of Usuhaia. This weather is unusual for this region. A day before we arrived here it snowed.<\/p>\n

... Puerto Almanza, small fishing village at the Beagle Canal<\/p><\/div>\n

After Ushuaia we visit the Estancia Haberton and a small fishing village, named Puerto Almanza and then we try to find the \u201cseclusion of Tierra del Fuego\u201d. We drive away from the Routa National No. 3 and follow a gravel road for about 40 km. According to our map we should find here the lake \u201cLago Yehuin\u201d. But \u2013 no lake to see, no signs, nothing. We think it over, if we should drive back, but since it is already late we decide to carry on. So we drive for a few more km and there it is, Lago Yehuin. A wonderful lake with crystal clear water. Far in the west we can see the glacier and the snowy mountains of the Darwin Cordillere. At the banks of the lake there is a hotel which has burned down. No human beings, no sole, nothing. Silence! It is quiet mysterious. In this moment one could believe that we are the only people on the whole earth.<\/p>\n

... \u201eGhost forest\u201c at the Lago Yehuin<\/p><\/div>\n

The wind stops and the sun warms us up again.
\nMichaela hears some noise, from the direction, where we came from. But with so much silence one can fantasize. After a while, I can hear the noise as well. It is a jeep with Joli and Ingo. A couple which we have already met earlier on the campground in Usuhaia. With warm clothes and coffee and tea we sit together at the lake, speak about \u201cGod and the world\u201d until the coldness gets us back into our cars.<\/p>\n

In the morning we go separate ways again. Joli and Ingo want to stay a couple of more days and we want to go up north and then onto the Chilenian side of Tierra del Fuego. Shortly before the border we get more petrol and as well groceries, since the prices in Chile are about double as high then in Argentina. Since fruits, veggies and meat is not allowed to bring over to Chile we get them out of the fridge and into our Toilette (which we never used as a toilette but as a store). Now we do hope that the controller prefer to look into our fridge rather then into our toilette. Yes, this was right, he looks into our fridge and points onto our Toilette: Ah, el bano, muy bien (Ah, a toilette, great!)<\/p>\n

Again over dusty gravel roads. We drive by at closed Minefields, which still remember the time of the \u201cAlmost war of 1978\u201d The signs are even in German and English stating \u201cDo not enter\u201d. In those times there was starting a fight between Argentina and Chile, fighting for three tiny rocks on the coast of Tierra del Fuego. Both countries did state that they are the owners of it. In the year 1985 the pope was that one to settle the dispute by taking the advantage that both presidents have been very religious.
\nAt sundown we arrive the coast where we stay overnight. Since here are no trees I collect flot-wood for our campfire.<\/p>\n

There is enough of it at the beach. Meanwhile Michaela prepare the smuggled Argentinean meat. That\u00b4s the reason, today the meat tastes even better. Two fishermen, which are working on a fishing-ship be anchored, see the campfire and come on shore with a small boat. Even if there dialect is hard to understand for us and with our not to good Spanish, we have an interesting conversation. Certainly our dictionary is as well quiet useful. But both of them have to get up tomorrow morning early, so therefore they leave us after another hour again.<\/p>\n

... last evening on Tierra del Fuego<\/p><\/div>\n

We say good bye to Tierra del Fuego. From Porvenir we take a small ferry, which brings us in
\n2 \u00bd hours over the Street of Magellan to the port of Punta Arenas. When we arrive the sky is full of clouds. The city of Punta Arenas has as well the name of \u201cGate to the Antarctica\u201d. Out of this port lot\u00b4s of cruise ships leave during the South-Summer month to the 6th continent. Punta Arenas with a population of 120 000 is not really an attractive city.<\/p>\n

Our way leads us towards the national park of Torres del Paine. On our way we make a stop at a small colony of Magellan-Penguins, which take their name from the Street of Magellan where they live. When it gets winter-time they make their way to Brazil.<\/p>\n

We flee as well towards the North in the hope that we will get warm weather and the storm will become just wind. At a place called Cerro Castillo we have the possibility to watch Gauchos (the cowboys of South-America), how they brand the young cattle.<\/p>\n

They get them with a lasso and two Gauchos are holding them. Then a red hot sign from the various Estancia gets stuck on there back side.<\/p>\n

Because of the storm, which always gets us dust in the eyes we leave this place. The storm is now more like a hurricane. The door to our bus is nearly not to open, honestly!! Once we are in the bus we are secured. Who ever has to go now out for any necessary things, should think it over twice. The wind (?) comes from all over.
\nJust in the evening, once we arrive at the Torres del Paine it gets a bit better.<\/p>\n

Already on our way to the National park we can see lots of herds of Guanakos and Nandus, the South American ostrich. Three condors are up in the sky and a small group of Flamingos are walking on the shore of a small lake. There are as well Pumas in this Park, but to see one of those it is quiet unusual. We overnight at a place where it is allowed to camp and have a terrific view up to Cuernos del Paine, a huge mountain range and the heart of the national park.<\/p>\n

In the evening it gets quiet cool, so we decide not to cook outside. We have cold kitchen and go to bed early under our warm blanket, dreaming about a good trekking weather for tomorrow. Well the weather seems not to get better, the weather forecast is rain, mist and more wind, so we decide after three more days to leave and go further back to Argentina.<\/p>\n

... in the Torres del Paine-National park<\/p><\/div>\n

We are now on the Cuarenta ( Routa National No. 40) direction north through the Patagonian Table mountains until El Calafate. Then a side street to the glacier Perito Moreno The Patagonian inland ice field with its glaciers is the biggest ice field of the world, after the ice fields of the poles and Greenland. About 30 m far away from the glacier we can watch ice rocks of the size of a house falling into the Lago Argentina with enormous noise. It is fantastic so see this and we are for a long time here, watching it.<\/p>\n

Here we meet Petra and Richard again which are from Schrobenhausen (Bavaria) and are in Argentina and Chile for 3 month in there VW-bus. We already met them in the National park Torres del Paine.
\nAll together we drive to Lago Roca, where we stay for a couple of days. The daily highlight is the campfire in the evening with temperatures nearly to cero degrees Celsius. When we are cooled out, the only thing which helps, once we are back in our buses, are hot water bottles and the heater.<\/p>\n

\nDuring the night we hear a noise now and then and we know this is not a thunderstorm but ice rocks falling into the Lago Argentino. Then we even get deeper into our warm blankets.
