<\/a>... die Saison ist vorbei - leere Str\u00e4nde am Lago Villarrica mit gleichnamigen Vulkan im Hintergrund<\/p><\/div>\n
Die B\u00e4ume unter dem unser VW-Bus steht, haben den Regen der letzten beiden Tage von uns ferngehalten. Sobald sich das Wetter bessert wollen wir wieder weiter. Am vierten Tag ist es so weit, es kann wieder los gehen. Nach ein paar Kilometer Fahrt h\u00f6ren wir es schon wieder. Dieses Ger\u00e4usch welches uns seit letzter Woche verfolgt. Es kommt und geht und wir wissen nicht woher es kommt und wohin es geht. Es macht uns noch wahnsinnig. Um der \u201eSache\u201c mal endlich nachzugehen, stelle ich mich hinten auf die Sto\u00dfstange und Michaela f\u00e4hrt los. Nach ein paar Metern kann ich das Ger\u00e4usch bereits lokalisieren. Ich schraube das hintere linke Rad ab und da haben wir des R\u00e4tsels L\u00f6sung. Die Schraubfeder ist gebrochen. Im ersten Moment ein Schreck. Gott sei Dank k\u00f6nnen wir noch fahren, wenn auch nur mit Vorsicht. Wir machen den n\u00e4chsten VW-H\u00e4ndler im 100 Kilometer entfernten Temuco ausfindig und fahren umgehend dorthin. Dieser erkl\u00e4rt uns, er h\u00e4tte letzte Woche den Vertrag mit VW gek\u00fcndigt und verweist uns auf einen \u00f6rtlichen Ersatzteilh\u00e4ndler. Der Ersatzteilh\u00e4ndler kann uns auch nicht weiterhelfen und meint, wir sollen doch ins 370 Kilometer entfernte Puerto Montt fahren, dort befinde sich die n\u00e4chste VW-Vertretung. Wir fahren noch zu einen weiteren Ersatzteilh\u00e4ndler in Temuco, den wir an der Strecke sehen. Der l\u00e4sst uns wissen, eine neue Schraubfeder bekommen wir nur \u00fcber VW-Chile und diese hat ihren Sitz in der Hauptstadt Santiago. Freundlicherweise gibt er uns die Telefonnummer von VW-Chile mit. Wie sich sp\u00e4ter herausstellt ist die Telefonnummer falsch. Wir fahren in den n\u00e4chsten Telefonladen und w\u00e4lzen uns selber durch die dicken Telefonb\u00fccher. Als wir endlich die richtige Nummer haben und uns verbinden lassen, meldet sich der Anrufbeantworter und weist uns darauf hin, dass wir au\u00dferhalb der Gesch\u00e4ftszeiten anrufen. Somit m\u00fcssen wir es morgen noch mal versuchen. Am n\u00e4chsten Tag teilt uns der zust\u00e4ndige Sachbearbeiter mit, dass die Schraubfeder nicht in Chile vorr\u00e4tig sei und er diese erst in Deutschland bestellen m\u00fcsse. Selbst als Eilsendung w\u00fcrde die Lieferzeit circa drei Wochen betragen. Nun solange wollen wir eigentlich nicht warten, noch dazu da eine \u201edreiw\u00f6chige Lieferzeit\u201c schon mal f\u00fcnfw\u00f6chig bedeuten kann. Deswegen starten wir unseren n\u00e4chsten Versuch. Wir rufen Christian, Michaelas Bruder, an und fragen ob er bei VW in Deutschland Preis und Lieferzeit anfragen und zugleich einen Spediteur finden k\u00f6nnte, der uns dieses Teil so schnell wie m\u00f6glich nach Chile bef\u00f6rdern kann. Umgehend macht sich Christian an die Arbeit und leitet sofort alles in die Wege. Zwischenzeitlich fragen wir beim Generalkonsulat der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Santiago an, ob wir die Postadresse benutzen d\u00fcrfen und das Ersatzteil f\u00fcr einige Tage bei ihnen lagern k\u00f6nne. Die Dame an der Telefonvermittlung teilt uns mit, diese Frage k\u00f6nne diese Woche nicht mehr beantwortet werden, (es ist Freitag vormittags) da der zust\u00e4ndige Mitarbeiter, welcher diese Entscheidung treffen kann, heute verhindert ist. Wir sollen doch freundlicherweise am Montag noch mal anrufen. Auch nach nochmaligem bitten und dem Hinweis \u201ees w\u00e4re f\u00fcr uns sehr dringend und wichtig\u201c erteilt sie uns eine Abfuhr. Unser Nervenkost\u00fcm ist kurz vorm zerreisen. Seit zwei Tagen sind wir nur am Fahren und Telefonieren. K\u00fchl bleiben und \u00fcberlegen. N\u00e4chste M\u00f6glichkeit, wir rufen beim Honorarkonsulat in Vina del Mar an und tragen unser Anliegen vor. Problemlos und freundlich kommen sie unserer Bitte nach. Wir teilen Christian die Lieferadresse mit und er l\u00e4\u00dft uns wissen \u201e die Schraubfeder geht heute noch raus, Lieferzeit ca. 10 Tage\u201c. <\/a>... Samstag ist in ganz Chile Waschtag<\/p><\/div>\n
Wir sind immer noch im Seengebiet unterwegs oder wie es im Volksmund hei\u00dft: die \u201eChilenischen Schweiz\u201c. In den letzten beiden Jahrhunderten sind viele Tausende Schweizer und Deutsche hierher ausgewandert wo zuvor nur die Mapuche- Indianer lebten. Nicht umsonst tr\u00e4gt dieses St\u00fcck Land den Namen chilenische Schweiz, denn auch landschaftlich hat es mit der Schweiz einige \u00c4hnlichkeiten. Heute leben noch \u00fcber 150 000 Chilenen deutscher Herkunft in der Region. An den Stra\u00dfen finden wir Schilder mit Schriftz\u00fcgen wie \u201eKuchen y Strudel\u201c, \u201eBier vom Fass\u201c oder \u201eBiergarten\u201c . Wir fahren weiter \u00fcber die D\u00f6rfer. Es ist Herbst und die Ernte ist im vollem Gang. Auch wir nehmen mit, was uns die Natur ernten l\u00e4sst. Zum Beispiel Brombeeren, diese gibt es hier so viele wie Sand in der Sahara. Im nu hat Michaela ein paar Gl\u00e4ser Brombeer-Marmelade eingekocht.<\/p>\n

Reisen hei\u00dft auch Leute treffen und kennen lernen. So haben wir uns mit Joli und Ingo, den beiden Schweizern die wir bereits vor zwei Monaten in Feuerland getroffen haben, per Internet verabredet. Wir verbringen zusammen ein paar Tage in der Hosteria La Suizandina, die ebenfalls von einer jungen Schweizer Familie gef\u00fchrt wird. Auf dem dazugeh\u00f6rigen Campingplatz haben wir uns f\u00fcr ein paar Tage eingerichtet. Joli und Ingo haben diesmal einen Gast dabei. Es ist Reni, Jolis Schwester welche die beiden f\u00fcr zwei Monate besucht und mit ihnen mitreist. Wir machen Wanderungen in die umliegenden Araukarienw\u00e4ldern, von denen manche B\u00e4ume ein stolzes Alter von \u00fcber 1000 Jahre haben. Abends kochen wir gemeinsam und H\u00f6hepunkt des Tages ist dann immer das Lagerfeuer an dem wir meist bis Mitternacht sitzen und uns Geschichten erz\u00e4hlen. Reni und Michaela kneten Brotteig. Anschlie\u00dfend stellen sie einen geschlossen Topf mit dem Teig in die Glut des Feuers. Auf den Deckel wird ebenfalls Glut gelegt, so dass der Topf ringsum mit Glut bedeckt ist.<\/p>\n

Nach einer guten Stunde ist der Teig gebacken und wir haben am Morgen frisches Brot. Momentan probieren wir noch verschiedenen Mehlsorten aus. Das Ergebnis ist mittlerweile schon recht gut. Da es in Chile und Argentinien nur Wei\u00dfbrot oder \u00e4hnliches zu kaufen gibt, kann man sich das Brotessen hier abgew\u00f6hnen. Deshalb macht es auch richtig Spa\u00df lieber selber zu backen auch wenn das Brot mit vielen K\u00f6rnern nat\u00fcrlich, manchmal etwas dunkel wird. Daher der Name \u201eSchwarzbrot\u201c „SMILEY“<\/p>\n
<\/a>... Lagerleben bei der Hosteria La Suizandina<\/p><\/div>\n
Da wir nun bei Schweizern und mit Schweizern zusammen sind, darf ein typisches Schweizer Gericht dazu nat\u00fcrlich nicht fehlen. Wir reservieren einen Tisch in der Hosteria zum Raklette-Essen. Soviel Schweiz in S\u00fcdamerika haben wir nicht erwartet! Jeder Tag geht viel zu schnell vorbei und so werden aus ein paar Tagen ganze acht Tage. Es gibt einfach viel zu viel zu erz\u00e4hlen. Joli, Reni und Ingo bleiben noch ein paar Tage in der Araukarien-Region. Wir fahren weiter Richtung Westen an den Pazifischen Ozean. Urpl\u00f6tzlich \u00e4ndert sich die Vegetation. Ab sofort ist nicht mehr gr\u00fcn die tonangebende Farbe sondern braun. Palmen wachsen am Stra\u00dfenrand und ein warmer Wind bl\u00e4st vom Meer her. Kurz vor Sonnenuntergang erreichen wir dann endlich die K\u00fcste.
\nUm einen Campingplatz oder einen g\u00fcnstigen \u00dcbernachtungsplatz zu suchen, bleibt uns keine Zeit mehr. Wir stellen uns in einem kleinen Fischerdorf direkt an den Strand mit der Hoffnung, dass uns keiner sieht und wir die Nacht \u00fcber Ruhe haben. Bis Mitternacht geht alles gut, dann werden wir aus dem Schlaf gerissen. Die Dorfjugend hat wohl kurzfristig eine Mitternachts-Disco-Party organisiert und wir stehen mit unserem Bus mitten drin. Es wird schon hell als die letzten den Strand r\u00e4umen. Halbausgeschlafen ziehen wir weiter nordw\u00e4rts an der K\u00fcste entlang auf rotbraunen Erdstra\u00dfen unterwegs.<\/p>\n

Vier Ochsengespanne kommen uns entgegen, die Karren mit Kartoffeln \u00fcberladen. Es ist Sonntag fr\u00fchmorgens. Wo wollen die denn heute um die Zeit schon hin? Alles dreht sich zur Zeit um die Ernte. An einer alten Dreschmaschine bewundern wir, wie es die Erntehelfer in der staubigen Luft den ganzen Tag nur so aushalten. Einige tragen zum Schutz Brillen und Staubt\u00fccher.<\/p>\n

Weiter geht es bis Iloca, einem kleinen Ort am Meer, wo wir \u00fcbernachten. Am Morgen kommen die Fischer vom Fang zur\u00fcck. Die Boote werden mit Ochsengespannen an Land gezogen. Um die Fische in den Netzen schneller aussortieren zu k\u00f6nnen, werden die Panzer der in gro\u00dfer Anzahl verfangenen Krebse, mit Holzst\u00f6cken zerschmettert. Die wenigen gefangenen Fische kommen in einen separaten Beh\u00e4lter. Die M\u00f6wen sowie die Stra\u00dfenhunde versammeln sich um die Boote und warten auf ihr Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck.<\/p>\n

Im ganzen Dorf richt es nach Fisch. Nach einer halben Stunde ertragen wir den Gestank nicht mehr und haben wortw\u00f6rtlich \u201e die Schnauze voll\u201c und fl\u00fcchten aus dem Dorf. Wir fahren weiter \u00fcber die D\u00f6rfer. Mal Schotterpiste, mal Teerstra\u00dfe. Oft sind die Schotterpisten besser zu befahren als die kaputten Teerstra\u00dfen mit ihren Schlagl\u00f6chern. Wieder \u00e4ndert sich die Landschaft. Nun Obstplantagen, Weing\u00e4rten und mittendrin prachtvolle Herrenh\u00e4user. Es ist wirklich eine fruchtbare Gegend s\u00fcdwestlich von Santiago. Alles was hier w\u00e4chst wird t\u00e4glich frisch an der Stra\u00dfe verkauft. F\u00fcr Obst- und Gem\u00fcseesser ein wahres Paradies. N\u00fcsse, Trauben, Tomaten, Kartoffel, Zwiebeln, Zitronen, Orangen, Datteln, Erdbeeren, Mais und vieles mehr. 4 Kilogramm Avocados z.B. kosten umgerechnet 1,40 EUR.
\nAuch eines der vielen Weing\u00fcter wollen wir besuchen. Wir fahren direkt mit dem VW-Bus durch einen der Weing\u00e4rten. Die Erntehelfer erblicken uns, es sind zumeist Jugendliche. Sie lassen die Arbeit liegen, kommen auf uns zu, bestaunen unseren VW-Bus und fragen uns L\u00f6cher in den Bauch. Als Geschenk schneiden sie frische Traubenz\u00f6pfe ab und geben sie uns mit auf den Weg. Eine herzliche Begegnung.<\/p>\n

Mittlerweile sind einige Tage vergangen und unser Ersatzteil aus Deutschland m\u00fcsste eigentlich schon im Konsulat in Vina del Mar liegen. T\u00e4glich rufen wir an nur um zu erfahren, dass es noch nicht da sei. Wir f\u00fcllen unseren Lebensmittelvorrat nochmals auf und nisten uns f\u00fcr ein Paar Tage auf einen Campingplatz n\u00f6rdlich von Vina del Mar ein, denn es steht das Osterwochenende vor der T\u00fcr. Auch am Gr\u00fcndonnerstag keine Lieferung ans Konsulat. Gerne h\u00e4tten wir die Schraubfeder noch vor Ostern erhalten und ausgewechselt. Etwas entt\u00e4uscht sind wir \u00fcber die gl\u00e4ubigen Katholiken Chiles. Selbst am Karfreitag wird gearbeitet und die Kirchen sind verschlossen. Am Ostersamstag erfahren wir, warum die Chilenen nicht mehr gl\u00e4ubig und die Kirchen verschlossen sind. Julio, der
\nCampingplatzbesitzer kl\u00e4rt uns auf, und meint \u201emit Ostern m\u00fcsst ihr noch eine Woche warten\u201c. Tja das ist das Leben eines Reisenden, man verliert die Wochentage aus den Augen und w\u00e4hnt schon Ostern wo erst Weihnachten ist.<\/p>\n
<\/a>.... nachdem \u201eEsmeralda\u201c auf der Damentoilette des Campingplatzes auftauchte, hatte Michaela kein Bed\u00fcrfnis mehr.<\/p><\/div>\n
Am Dienstag endlich die positive Nachricht aus dem Konsulat. Die Schraubfeder ist da. Nichts wie hin und das lang ersehnte Teil abholen. Am gleichen Tag bauen wir sie auf dem Campingplatz noch ein. Nun sind wir wieder ger\u00fcstet f\u00fcr die vielen Schotterpisten. Am Morgen fahren wir weiter auf der Panamericana Richtung Norden. Unser Tagesziel ist die K\u00fcstenstadt La Serena. Es ist bereits sp\u00e4t nachmittags und wir brauchen noch einen Stellplatz f\u00fcr die Nacht. Pl\u00f6tzlich merke ich mit dem Gangschalthebel stimmt etwas was nicht. Ich probiere alle G\u00e4nge durch und stelle fest, es lassen sich nur noch der dritte, vierte und f\u00fcnfte Gang schalten. Sch…. . Bis zur n\u00e4chsten gr\u00f6\u00dferen Stadt \u2013 La Serena – sind es noch gute 40 Kilometer mit mehreren Steigungen und in sp\u00e4testens zwei Stunden wird es dunkel. Es ist still, keiner sagt was und jeder hofft , dass wir alle vor uns noch liegenden Berge mit dem 3. Gang hoch kommen und nicht in der Dunkelheit irgendwo stehen bleiben. Von der nahe gelegenen K\u00fcste zieht Nebel auf. In der Ferne sehen wir ein \u00fcberdimensionales Kreuz am Horizont. Es ist das Kreuz des Dritten Jahrtausends der Stadt Coquimbo, das \u00fcber dem ganzen Ort thront mit einer beachtlichen H\u00f6he von 92 Metern.<\/p>\n

Am Ortseingang angekommen suchen wir die erste Tankstelle auf und fahren zur Diagnose unseren VW-Bus auf eine Hebeb\u00fchne. Auf den ersten Blick sehen wir es, der Kugelkopf des Schaltgest\u00e4nges f\u00fcr die ersten beiden G\u00e4nge und den R\u00fcckw\u00e4rtsgang ist gebrochen. Der Mechaniker der Tankstelle meint, hier kann auch er uns nicht weiterhelfen, aber er kenne jemanden der das richten k\u00f6nnte. Ein kurzer Anruf und ein paar Minuten sp\u00e4ter stehen zwei weitere Mechaniker da. Sie bauen das Gest\u00e4nge aus, verschwinden damit so schnell wie sie gekommen sind und eine halben Stunde sp\u00e4ter kommen sie mit dem reparierten Teil zur\u00fcck. Sie bauen es ein und siehe die G\u00e4nge funktionieren wieder alle einwandfrei. Wir bezahlen umgerechnet 15,00 EUR. Nachdem es bereits finster ist, erlaubt uns der Tankstellenp\u00e4chter die Nacht auf dem Tankstellengel\u00e4nde zu verbringen.<\/p>\n

Am Morgen beschlie\u00dfen wir im kleinen Serviceroom der Tankstelle zu fr\u00fchst\u00fccken. Wir sind nicht die einzigen. Vor dem Eingang steht ein feuerroter Brasil-VW-K\u00e4fer, der schon einige Jahre auf dem Buckel hat. Der Fahrer sitzt vertieft in seiner Zeitung – glauben wir – an einem kleinen Seitentisch und verzehrt zwei belegte Toastbrote,. Er beobachtet unsere etwas unentschlossene Bestellung, steht auf, zeigt uns seine Toastbrote und meint in englischer Sprache \u201e Would you like to have toasted bread like this, they are tasting very good\u201c. (M\u00f6chtet ihr Toastbrote so wie ich sie esse, sie schmecken hervorragend). Schnell kommen wir mit ihm ins Gespr\u00e4ch. Er stellt sich als Oscar Fiedler vor und ist der Kulturbeauftragte der 160 000 Einwohnerstadt Coquimbo. Ein paar Brocken Deutsch hat er auch auf Lager, da sein Vater geb\u00fcrtiger N\u00fcrnberger ist, der Rest der Unterhaltung erfolgt in Englisch. Er l\u00e4dt uns in sein B\u00fcro ein und erz\u00e4hlt von seiner Arbeit.<\/p>\n

Oscar ruft seinen Freund Raul an, welcher Deutsch spricht und sich f\u00fcr uns den ganzen Tag Zeit nimmt um uns Coquimbo und La Serena zu zeigen. Raul war in den Siebziger Jahren aktiver Allende-Anh\u00e4nger und musste nach dem Millit\u00e4rputsch Chile verlassen; er kam nach Deutschland ins Exil. Er sagt \u201e die Deutschen waren sehr nett und hilfsbereit, deshalb m\u00f6chte ich von der Hilfsbereitschaft etwas zur\u00fcckgeben\u201c. Eine Familie hat ihn damals aufgenommen und die Kinder waren wie Geschwister zu ihm. Er erz\u00e4hlt \u201e Hans ist wie mein Bruder\u201c und sie besuchen sich auch heute noch. Raul lebte fast 30 Jahre in Deutschland, ging dann aus gesundheitlichen Gr\u00fcnden zur\u00fcck ins w\u00e4rmere Chile. Und Hans, Raul\u00b4s Bruder ist mittlerweile erster Stadtrat und Stellvertretender Oberb\u00fcrgermeister von Hannover.<\/p>\n
<\/a>... Tangsammler am Strand von Coquimbo<\/p><\/div>\n
Elisa, Rauls Frau, hat uns am Ostersonntag zum Nachmittagstee geladen. Zusammen mit ihren spanischen Freunden genie\u00dfen wir Tee, Torte und Kuchen. Raul zeigt uns sein Abschiedsgeschenk, welches er von seinen deutschen Freunden bekommen hat als er vor vier Jahren nach Chile zur\u00fcck ging. Es ist eine dicke Mappe mit Berichten, Zeitungsausschnitten und Fotos von all den Hilfsaktionen bei welchen Raul in seiner Freizeit aktiv beteiligt war. Eines seiner gr\u00f6\u00dften Hilfsprojekte war die Einrichtung einer Nicaraguahilfe. Raul hat ein rie\u00dfengro\u00dfes Herz und wir sind ger\u00fchrt und dankbar f\u00fcr seine Hilfsbereitschaft welche wir am eigenen Leibe sp\u00fcren konnten. Auch als wir am n\u00e4chsten Tag Probleme mit der Werkstatt haben, ein Anruf und Raul ist in f\u00fcnf Minuten da. Wieder ist es Zeit um aufzubrechen und Neues zu erleben. Bei La Serena fahren wir ins Valle d`Elqui, ein fruchtbares Tal wo auf den bew\u00e4sserten Feldern entlang des Flusses und an den H\u00e4ngen der W\u00fcstenberge ein Gro\u00dfteil des chilenischen Weines w\u00e4chst. Hier gedeihen auch
\ndie sonnig-s\u00fc\u00dfen Muskatellertrauben aus dem der Pisco, das chilenische Nationalgetr\u00e4nk, gebrannt wird.<\/p>\n
<\/a>...Valle del Elqui, Weinanbau im Tal und an den H\u00e4ngen der W\u00fcstenberge<\/p><\/div>\n
Unser Ziel ist eigentlich das Nachbartal Valle del Rio Hurtado wo wir hoffen, nochmals unsere Schweizer Freunde zu treffen, denn auch sie wollten in dieses Tal fahren. In unserer Landkarte ist ein kleiner Weg eingezeichnet, der die beiden T\u00e4ler \u00fcber die Berge verbindet. Wir tauchen in eine andere Welt ein. W\u00fcstenkordillere, Kakteen, Staub, Hitze, keine Menschen, nichts.<\/p>\n

Nach zweieinhalb Stunden Fahrzeit und kurz vor Einbruch der Dunkelheit erreichen wir das Andenbauerndorf Hurtado. Von hieraus sind es nur noch ein paar Kilometer zum Treffpunkt Hazienda Los Andes. Joli, Reni und Ingo treffen wir erst am anderen Tag. Auch wenn wir dieses Mal nur einen Tag Zeit f\u00fcr einander haben, freuen wir uns alle riesig und haben viel zu erz\u00e4hlen. Da Reni in drei Wochen nach Hause fliegt, haben die drei noch ein straffes Programm vor sich und fahren am anderen Tag weiter in den Norden Chiles.<\/p>\n
<\/a>... kurz vor Einbruch der Dunkelheit erreichen wir das Andendorf Hurtado mit fruchtbaren Tal am gleichnamigen Flu\u00df.<\/p><\/div>\n
F\u00fcr uns wird es Zeit nach \u00fcber sechs Wochen wieder mal das Land zu wechseln. Wir wollen in den Norden Argentiniens. Der k\u00fcrzeste Weg f\u00fchrt \u00fcber den Andenpass Agua Negra. Die Passh\u00f6he markiert zugleich die Grenze zwischen Chile und Argentinien und liegt auf 4779 m \u00fcber den Meeresspiegel. Der Pass ist nur von Dezember bis Mai ge\u00f6ffnet. In den S\u00fcd-Wintermonaten ist er auf Grund der starken Schneef\u00e4lle gesperrt. Wir fahren bis zum Talende des Valle del Elqui wo wir an der letzten Tankstelle das Fahrzeug f\u00fcr die H\u00f6he vorbereiten. Luft, Wasser, \u00d6l kontrollieren, den Dieselkraftstoff mischen wir einen Antifrostzusatz bei, damit wir in der H\u00f6he bei den Minustemperaturen keine Probleme bekommen. Die chilenische Grenzabfertigung sowie die Zollstation liegen bei der letzten Siedlung am Talende und somit 100 km vor der tats\u00e4chlichen Grenze die am Pass oben verl\u00e4uft . Auch die argentinische Grenzstation liegt erst ca. 80 Kilometer weit im Landesinneren vorm ersten Dorf. Die Grenzpolizisten wollen von uns wissen ob wir am Pass \u00fcbernachten oder noch heute direkt nach Argentinien einreisen. Wir teilen ihnen mit, dass wir an einer Lagune in ca. 3000 m H\u00f6he die Nacht verbringen und dann am anderen Morgen den Pass \u00fcberqueren und nach Argentinien einreisen wollen.. Diese Informationen werden den argentinischen Grenzpolizeikollegen mitgeteilt. Sollten wir morgen die argentinische Grenzstation nicht passieren, w\u00fcrden sie einen Suchtrupp losschicken. Es kommt immer wieder vor, dass Erdrutsche abgehen und die Stra\u00dfe nicht mehr passierbar ist oder Reisende mit der Puna (H\u00f6henkrankheit) Probleme bekommen.
\nAnfangs windet sich die Schotterstra\u00dfe wie eine Schlange durch die Bergflanken und wir merken kaum, dass wir an H\u00f6he gewinnen.<\/p>\n

Die Farben des Gesteins \u00e4ndern sich st\u00e4ndig in allen m\u00f6glichen Pastellfarben. Mal Ocker, mal Kaminrot oder Samtgr\u00fcn in den unterschiedlichsten Marmorierungen.<\/p>\n

Die letzen Sonnenstrahlen verst\u00e4rken die Farbt\u00f6ne nochmals, gerade noch rechtzeitig beziehen wir unser Nachtlager an der Lagune. So nah waren wir den Himmel noch nie.Ein grandioser Sternenhimmel in fast schon unheimlicher Stille verabschiedet uns an diesem Tag und die erwartete K\u00e4lte bleibt in der Nacht aus. Am Morgen haben wir beide leichte Kopfschmerzen. Dies sind die ersten Symptome der Puna. Wir fahren weiter durch ein Hochtal nach dem anderen und wieder klettert die Stra\u00dfe fast unbemerkt hoch. Ringsum \u00fcberall Berge, es kommt uns vor als seien wir ganz alleine mit dem Auto auf dem Mars unterwegs.<\/p>\n

Von der Ferne sehen wir eine lange Staubfahne die von einem Auto hochgewirbelt wird. Gestern war es ein Auto und heute sind es drei Autos welchen wir begegneten. Die ersten B\u00fc\u00dferschneefelder, der H\u00f6henmesser zeigt die 4000 m Marke an. Nochmals 779 m die auch unserem VW-Bus zu schaffen machen. Der Leistungsabfall in der sauerstoffarmen Luft hier oben ist enorm. Hoffentlich h\u00e4lt \u201eEr\u201c durch. Im letzten Abschnitt steigt die Schotterstra\u00dfe nochmals extrem an. Rechts geht es 800 Meter den Berghang hinunter. Dann haben wir es geschafft, 4779 Meter Passh\u00f6he und zugleich Grenze. Au\u00dfer ein paar Steinmonumente und Schildern mit den Schriftz\u00fcgen der beiden L\u00e4ndern gibt es nicht viel zu sehen. Michaela m\u00f6chte gerne vorm Bus ihre Tasse Tee trinken doch der Wind ist so stark, dass sie ihr Vorhaben lieber gem\u00fctlich im Bus zu Ende bringt.<\/p>\n

Michaelas Kopfschmerzen sind verflogen. Bei mir kommt ein weiteres Symptom der Puna dazu, \u00dcbelkeit. So halten wir uns nicht mehr lange auf und beginnen mit der Abfahrt. Nun geht es 80 Kilometer st\u00e4ndig bergab bis zur argentinischen Grenzstation. Ich schw\u00f6re mir, so schnell keinen Andenpass mehr zu \u00fcberqueren. Mit jedem Meter nach unten geht es mir besser. Die Landschaft auf der argentinischen Seite des Passes ist nicht mehr ganz so spektakul\u00e4r wie auf der chilenischen Seite aber trotzdem sehenswert. An der Grenzstation hatte man uns schon erwartet: \u201eAh, das sind die zwei Deutschen\u201c. Bemerken m\u00f6chten wir, dass wir von den argentinischen sowie von den chilenischen Grenzbeamten sehr nett behandelt wurden. Von argentinischen Grenzpolizisten hatten wir ja leider schon anderes erlebt. Im Nachbardorf Rodeo haben wir uns erstmal f\u00fcr zwei Tage auf einem Campingplatz mit gro\u00dfen schattigen Trauerweiden eingemietet und erholen uns von den Strapazen.<\/p>\n

Am Abend bei Bier und Wein planen wir schon wieder die n\u00e4chste Anden\u00fcberquerung. F\u00fcrs Erste bleiben wir hier in Argentinien. Hier im Norden Argentiniens ist das Klima sehr hei\u00df, aber mehr davon erfahrt ihr im n\u00e4chsten Reisebericht.
\nMichaela und RaimundThe South-Autumn gets us quicker up North then we actually would like to do. The rainy season in the lake district has already started. The sunshades and deck chairs at the beach are already taken away. Just a few hotels and campgrounds are still open and there are nearly no holidaymaker to see. We are on a campground at the lake Lago Villaricca and imagine the lot\u00b4s and lot\u00b4s of tourists which have been here just two weeks ago. Now we are the only ones. Different then in Europe there is no early or after season here in South America. The season is just during the school holidays.<\/p>\n

The trees, under which our bus is parked, gives us protection against the rain which we had the last two days. In that moment the weather will clear up again, we want to go further up north. Finally at day four, the weather changes, well up we go. After a few kilometres ride we can hear it again. This noise which bothered us already since last week. It comes and goes and we don\u00b4t know where it comes from or where it go\u00b4s to. It makes us nearly mad. It\u00b4s enough know, we want to know what it is. While Michaela is driving the bus, I stand on the bumper in the back and already after a few kilometres I can already locate, where it is coming from. I take away the back wheel and here I find the answer to the riddle, a broken spring. A shock for the first moment but we still can drive with the bus just not any more gravel roads. We find out the nearest dealer of VW in the nearby town of Temuco. He explain to us, that since last week he quitted the contract with VW and tells us we should try it in Puerto Montt which is 370 km far away from Temuco. We try it at another place in Temuco, who\u2019s dealing with spare tools for different cars. He let us know, that this kind of tool we just will get over the head department of VW Chile which is located in Santiago, the capital of Chile. At least he gave us the telephone number of VW-Chile in Santiago. Later at the day, we find out that the number we\u2019ve been given is wrong. So up to a telephone shop and we search through the huge telephone books. When we finally found the number and going to phone it, we have an answering machine on the other side, which tells us that we phone out of office time. Well we phone again next day. Next day the official in charge let us know, that this tool is just to be ordered directly from VW Germany and the time to be delivered will be about three weeks. We actually don\u2019t want to wait that long, on top of it, if he tells us it need three weeks it can be that the actual time to be delivered is five weeks.
\nHere we are at a point, where we want to try another variation. We phone Christian, the brother of Michaela, and ask him, if he would be so kind to find out the price of the spring and the way of delivering. Immediately Christian is working on that problem and find out, that the spring can be delivered already in the next 10 days. Meanwhile we phone to the consulate general of the republic of Germany to ask, if we could use their address to let the spring deliver to. The lady at the phone tells us that in the moment the person which could answer to the question is not available anymore (it is Friday morning) we should phone again on Monday. Even after telling her, that it is quite important and necessary for us to have an address, she is not able to do anything for us. In that moment we are nearly at a nervous breakdown, since we did nothing than phoning and driving from one place to another the last two days. Keep cool and think over it! Next possibility is to phone to the consulate dignitaries of the republic of Germany in Vina del Mar. We phone and ask once again and immediately the problem is solved. Certainly we could send it to their address. We phone Christian and he informs us that the spring is already ordered and next day he will send the package out. Christian, we thank you so much for your prompt help! Our two families are just great!!!!<\/p>\n
<\/a>... In whole Chile is laundry day on a Saturday<\/p><\/div>\n
We are still in the lake district of Chile which is as well called the \u201cSwitzerland of Chile\u201d In the last two centuries thousands of German and Swiss people have immigrated to this part of Chile, where before only the Indio\u2019s called Mapuche have been living. The reason this part of Chile is called the \u201cSwitzerland of Chile\u201d is that nature really looks a bit like Switzerland. Over 150 000 people, which have their roots in Germany or Switzerland are still living in this part. All over we can see signs with .\u201dKuchen y Strudel\u201d (cakes and strudels), \u201cBier vom Fa\u00df\u201d (beer of the barrel) or \u201cBiergarten\u201d (beer garden). We drive through the countryside. It is Autumn and therefore all over is harvest time. As well we pick blackberries along our way, since they are growing like mad. Not long and Michaela have done a few cans of fantastic marmalade out of blackberries.<\/p>\n

Part of travelling is certainly to meet and get to know people. Via email we made up an appointment with Joli and Ingo, two Swiss which we already met in Usuhaia. We want to spent a few days together at the Hosteria La Suizandina, a Hosteria which is led by a Swiss family. On the campground which is part of the Hosteria we make ourselves comfortable. This time Joli and Ingo are not alone, Reni, the sister of Joli is travelling with them for the next two month through Chile. We do together some hikes in the wonderful forests full of trees of Araucarias. Some of the trees are more than a 1000 year old. In the evenings we cook together and the highlight of each day is to sit around a campfire till midnight while we tell each other stories. Reni and Michaela are preparing the dough for a bread which we then place in a closed pan in the embers of the fire. On top of the pan we place as well some embers.<\/p>\n

Approximately after an hour the bread is finished. For tomorrow morning we have wonderful fresh baked bread. In the moment we still try different varieties and different wheat. Meanwhile we are already quite satisfied with our bread. There is not a real good bread to be found in Chile as well then in Argentina. Actually after a while as a German you can\u00b4t see anymore this kind of bread. Therefore it is not just fun to bake your own tasty bread with certainly lot\u2019s of seeds and nuts. Even if it is sometimes quiet black, maybe that is the reason, that we call in Germany some of our bread black bread „smiley“<\/p>\n

Since we are now together with Swiss people and are at a Swiss campground we think about to eat a typical Swiss dish. We reserve a table at the restaurant for Raclette (Swiss cheese dish). We never thought that we would find so much \u201cSwiss\u201d in the middle of South America. Every single day passes by so quick, that in the end instead of a few days we stay there over a week. There is simply to much to talk over. Joli, Reni and Ingo stay a few more days in the region of the Araucaria forest but we want to drive further up west to the Pacific. Suddenly the whole nature change face. The whole stretch the main colour was green, but from now on it is brown. Palm trees along the streets and a warm wind comes from the ocean. Shortly before sunset we reach the coast. It is already to dark to find a campground or a good place to overnight. So we place our bus at the beach next to a fishing village and hope that nobody will recognize us and we can sleep through the whole night. Till midnight everything is fine but then a bunch of young people comes to the beach and they start a midnight-disco-party. We in our bus are in the midst. The last are leaving the beach at sunrise and we are as well already awake. In this condition we start the new day along the coastline on red coloured streets.<\/p>\n

Four ox carriages are coming in our direction, full of potatoes. It is Sunday morning, where do they go at this time of the day already. Well it is harvest time! At an old threshing machine we admire the work of the people, how they can work with all that dust the whole day through. Some of them wearing eye glasses and scarfs to protect themselves from the dust.<\/p>\n

We drive further to Iloca, where we overnight, a small village situated on the coastline. In the morning the fishers are back from the sea. By using ox carriages the small boats are taken out from the water. To be more sufficient, the fisher smashes the crabs in the net with a kind of hammer. Just the fishes they will sell later on. For all the seagulls and the dogs it is breakfast time.<\/p>\n

The whole village smells after fish. After half an hour, we are really fed up with the smell and we flee. Our way takes us through more villages, sometimes on asphalt, sometimes gravel roads. Often the gravel roads are in better condition then the roads with asphalts. Holes where one could disappear. Again the outlook of nature changes. We pass by fruit plantation, vineyards and in the midst very often grand mansions. This is truly a fertile region south-west of Santiago. For vegetarians the pure paradise. All what grows here is directly sold along the street. Nuts, grapes, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, lemons, oranges, dates, strawberries, sweet corn and so on. 4 Kilograms of Avocados for example are to get for the price of 1,40 Euro.
\nWe want to visit as well one of the vineries. We drive along the vineyards and on our way we see lots of grape gatherer, mostly young people. They come towards our bus and look at it in astonishment. Lot\u2019s of questions they have. In the end they cut some grapes and give them to us as a present. A meeting with heart!<\/p>\n

Meanwhile some days passed and actually our tool should be already in Vina del Mar. Every day we phone to the consulate, just to get the information, that it is still not there. Since Easter is almost upon us we stock up our groceries and go for a few days to a campground, northwest of Vina del Mar, directly at the coast. Maundy Thursday – the spring is still not there. It would have been much easier to get the tool before Easter. On Good Friday we are very disappointed about the Roman-Catholics of Chile. Churches are closed and all shops are open. Julio, the owner of the campground tells us on Saturday, that the Easter weekend is just next week. Well this is the life of a traveller. After a while you have problems to know which day is today and you think it must be Eastern, instead Christmas is just upon us.<\/p>\n
<\/a>.... after \u201eEsmeralda\u201c did show up on the toilet of the campground, Michaela did not have any more necessities.<\/p><\/div>\n
Tuesday, finally a positive answer from the consulat. The spring is there. Up we go directly to Vina del Mar and back again to the campground. Same day we install it on the campground. Now we are prepared again for the gravel roads. Next day we go further on the Pan Americana towards the town of La Serena. It is already late afternoon when I realize, something is wrong with the gear stick. I try all of them and find out that I only can use the third, fourth and the fifth gear. Sh\u2026. Till Coquimbo\/ La Serena there are still 40 km to go with lots of up hills and latest in two hours it will get dark. None of us is talking, we both hope, that we can do the hills in front of us with the third gear and that we don\u2019t get stuck in the middle of the street when it starts to get night. From the coast there is already the fog coming. Now we see in the far distance a cross. It is the cross of the \u201c Third century\u201d of Coquimbo, which is standing on a hill with a height of 92 m<\/p>\n

At the beginning of the town we first see a petrol station and go straight away there. With the bus we have to go up a lifting platform and then we can already see our problem – the reverse gear is broken. The mechanic from the petrol station informs us, that with this problem he is not any more able to help us. But he takes his phone and calls another mechanic which did not need longer then 10 minutes to appear. With the removed gear stick in his hand he disappear, just to be back half an hour later with the repaired one. For this action we pay approximately 15 EUR. Since it is already dark, the owner of the petrol station allows us to stay with our bus at the petrol station<\/p>\n

In the morning we decide to have breakfast in the small service room of the petrol station. We are not the only one there. In front of the Service room is parked a fire red Brazil-VW K\u00e4fer, which is an older model. The driver of this car sits in the service room, having breakfast and intensively reading his newspaper. That\u2019s what we think. But he observe us as we can\u00b4t decide what we would like for our breakfast. That\u2019s the moment he stands up, coming over to us showing us his plate and speak to us in English \u201e Would you like to have toasted bread like this, they are tasting very good\u201c. That\u2019s the beginning of a talk. He introduces himself as Oskar Fiedler und that he is the director of the culturhouse here in Coquimbo with it\u00b4s
\n160 000 inhabitants. He knows as well a few words in German since his father is born and grown up in Nuremberg but already living since 1930 in Coquimbo, Chile. He invites us to his office and tells about his work.<\/p>\n

Oscar has a friend, Raul, which speaks fluent German. One phonecall and Raul comes along to the office and take a full day for us to show us the towns of Coquimbo and La Serena. Raul have been in the 1970th an active fan of Allende and had to leave Chile after the military revolt. From there he came to the exile to Germany. He tells us: \u201cThe Germans have been so nice and helpful to me, I want to give back just a bit from the help I received\u201d. A farmers family have been taking care about him and adding him to their family. Raul: \u201cHans is like my brother\u201d and between them is still the deepest friend(brother)ship. Raul did live in Germany over 30 years and did just out of health reason go back to the much warmer part here in Chile. Hans, Rauls brother is meanwhile the deputy mayor of Hannover.<\/p>\n

Elisa, Rauls wife invites us on Easter Sunday for the afternoon tee. Together with their Spanish friends we have tea, cake and tart. Raul shows us the farewell present which he got from his friends in Germany as he left four years ago. It is a big map full with witnesses of the work he did in Germany. Raul was in his free time an active part of so many relief organizations and the founder of the Nicaragua relief organization. Raul really has a big warm heart and we are very grateful to get so much warmness from him and Elisa. On the next day as we had a problem with the garage, a phone call and he was in between five minutes with us. Dear Elisa and Raul, thanks so much for your kindness and your great hospitality!<\/p>\n

Again it\u2019s time to leave and to see new wonderful places. In La Serena we drive through the Valle d\u00b4Elqui, a very fertile valley, where along the river and at the watered mountain ranges fruits and wine are growing. Here as well the very well known Muskateller grapes grow, from which the Pisco, the Chilenean national drink is made.<\/p>\n

Our goal for today is to reach the neighbour valley, called Valle del Rio Hurtado, where we hope to meet our Swiss friends. They as well wanted to drive there. In our map the street is marked as a tiny street, which connects this two valleys. We dive into another world, where other then the desert mountain range, cactus, dust and heat nothing else is to be found.<\/p>\n

After two and a half hours driving time and shortly before sunset we reach the Andes-farmer village of Hurtado. Now there are just a few kilometres more to go to the Hacienda Los Andes. Joli, Reni and Ingo arrive next day. Even if we just spend one day together, we are very happy to see each other and have plenty to talk about. The three have planned quite a lot, since Reni have to go back to Switzerland already in three weeks.<\/p>\n

After six weeks it is time for us to change the country again. We want to go to the north of Argentina and the shortest way is over the Andes-pass Agua Negra. The altitude of the pass is as well the actual border between Chile and Argentina and lies 4779 m above sea level. It is only opened between December and May. In the South-Winter month it is closed, due to heavy snowfalls. We drive to the end of the Valle del Elqui, where we do a check on our bus, to prepare for the height. Air, water and oil as well then an ant frost addition for our Diesel petrol to make sure we will not have problems up there when it is cold during the night. The Chilenian border control lies at the very end of the valley at a height of already 2000 m and 100 km before the actual border. As well the Argentinean border control is 80 km away from up there. The officer want to know, if we plan to overnight up there or if we go directly to the Argentinean border control. This information will then be passed over to the Argentinean border. Should we not pass in time there, they will look for us. There are often landslides and as well travellers which have problem with the height, the so called PUNA.

The colours of the rocks are changing very often in all different kind of varieties. There is ochre, chimney-red or a wonderful green.<\/p>\n

The colours are even stronger with the last sunbeams and we are just in time at the Laguna for our overnight place. The day says good bye to us with a fantastic sky full of stars and it is so silent up here at a height of 3000 m that you can hear your own blood circulation. During the night it did not get cold like we though. In the morning we both have a bit of head-ache, the first symptoms of the PUNA. We drive further on through the valleys up there, wherever we look, just mountains. We do have the feeling that we are totally alone somewhere on the Mars.<\/p>\n

In the far distance we see a car causing a big stir. Yesterday we saw a car and today already three cars. The first snow fields, our altimeter shows 4000 m. We still have to do 779 m and now we can already feel that even for our bus it is quiet hard to manage. In this height, where the oxygen is quiet less it is hard for the engine. Hopefully \u201cHE\u201d will manage it. In the last part the gravel road gets up quicker then yesterday. If you now look down, the mountains are falling vertical 800 m down. Finally we are at the pass, 4779 m high and the border between the two countries. Other then a few rocks done like a monument and signs showing Chile and Argentina, there is nothing more. Michaela wants to drink her cup of tea up here, but the wind is so strong, that she decides to fulfil this in the warm and wind still bus.<\/p>\n

Michaela\u2019s headache is gone. With me a further symptom of the PUNA comes to it: nausea. That\u2019s the reason we go down as quick as we can do. 80 km just down, now on the Argentinean side. Towards the border control. I swear to myself, that in the near future I will not do another pass over the Andes. With every meter going down I feel better. This side of the Andes is not as nice as on the Chilenian but still beautiful. At the border we are already expected. \u201cAh, the two Germans are here\u201d. One short remark to the two border controls: Both of them have been very nice and official other then we had it another time. In the next village called Rodeo we first did go on a campground for the next two days to get new power from that real tiring way over the Andes.<\/p>\n
